A semi-active tuned liquid column damper using magneto-rheological fluid (MR-TLCD) is proposed for wind-induced vibration mitigation of high-rise buildings. The magneto-rheological (MR) fluids can reversibly change from a free-flowing, linear viscous fluid to a semi-solid with controllable yield strength in milliseconds when exposed to a magnetic field. They are used as damping fluids to devise semi-active MR-TLCDs with alterable fluid viscosity. The sharply alterable fluid viscosity results in adjustable and controllable damping forces that achieve real-time structural vibration control. By applying a magnetic field to the MR fluid at the bottom part of a U-shaped tube, the damping effects of an MR-TLCD can be changed continuously through altering the magnetic field strength. Making use of the equivalent linearization technique, a stochastic response analysis for tall buildings incorporating semi-active MR-TLCDs subjected to random wind excitation is formulated. A 50-storey tall building using MR-TLCDs for wind-induced vibration mitigation is considered as a case study. The control effectiveness using MR-TLCDs is evaluated by comparing the RMS acceleration and deflection of the structure with an MR-TLCD damping system and with a conventional TLCD system.
