Phase Change Materials (PCMs) found considerable application in the 1980s and early 1990s in large air conditioning schemes. PCMs were primarily used to introduce capacitance within the system to enable it to take account of fluctuations in the daily cooling load. The main benefits of this are lower capital expenditure through smaller chiller size and lower revenue costs through greater use of off peak electricity. This paper reviews recent research into phase change materials applied to refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC). The specific research areas it addresses are methods for improving heat transfer within the PCM, optimum control techniques and novel methods of integration.
