The purpose of this paper is to discuss the foaming of thermoplastic wood composites. Most of the additives used to compatibilize or wet wood into polymer structures are very good wetting agents but they are very poor at supporting cellular structures. Key areas of melt strength and chain entanglements will also be discussed in this paper. We will discuss the problems of foaming wood composites, which can be compared to trying to make a bubble with bubble gum while your mouth is full with oatmeal cookies.1 The wood filler doesn't foam and there's not much plastic to hold the bubbles. Another description that has been used to explain this process is trying to blow up a balloon with a straw inside. The straw not only pricks the balloon but allows for the gas to escape, which results in no foam. There will be three main categories discussed within this paper for producing wood composites: 1. POLYMER STRUCTURES 2. PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING 3. CHEMISTRY OF THE FOAMING AGENT.
