The low thermal conductivity (λ-value) of cellular plastic is one of its most important properties. Thermal conductivity depends on the temperature gradient and the average temperature of measurement. These parameters are very important from the application point of view. This paper discusses the influence of various parameters (including the method of sample preparation, the temperature gradient and the average temperature of measurement) on λ-value of the rigid polyurethane foams blown with new generating agents (hydrocarbons, hydrofluorocarbons). The thermal insulating properties of different cellular plastics such as rigid and flexible polyurethane foams and expanded polystyrene are compared. The thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of foams were correlated with polyurethane matrix structure in order to show the effect of cell anisotropy on the heat insulating properties of the rigid foams blown with cyclopentane and HFC-365/227.
