Shoreface nourishments are frequently used in The Netherlands to cancel the effects of structural coastline erosion. They are usually placed below MSL -5 m and as close to shore as possible, with volumes of about 400 m~3/m. Such a volume exceeds the volume of a natural breaker bar. Within a few months they are transformed into an extra bar and landward trough, which may induce significant landward volume redistributions. The 'new' bar exists for several years during which higher parts of the profile gain more volume than they would have lost. The bar influences the natural cycle in which bars travel seaward in The Netherlands. Three nourishments are discussed. They may be oversized for their present purpose.
