Selection and operation of indirect steam drying of copper concentrates

The need to dry copper concentrates to feed autogenous smelting processes, and to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations and to reduce smelter operating costs have contributed to the commercialization of cost efficient and cleaner technologies based on indirect steam drying. Kvaerner Eureka's concentrate steam dryer is a proven technology that has contributed to reduce dust entrainment to the exhaust gas stream, thus leading to smaller dust separation units. These steam dryers are particularly designed for high availability, high-energy efficiency, low amount and velocity of exhaust gases, no SO_2, CO or CO_2 emissions, within a wide range of conditions, at low operating cost. However, the copper smelting industry, with few exceptions, is still giving low attention to a number of collateral issues when selecting steam drying technology, particularly those related to energy efficiency, corrosion, product flowability, etc. Based on Kvaerner Eureka's long experience in handling a wide variety of copper and other type of and powders, this paper discusses a number of operational advantages and possibilities offered by the unique coil design of its steam dryer, and criteria for optimal evaluation and technology selection, based on thorough analysis of the causes rather than the symptoms of steam drying operation.
