Since 1st July 2010 amendments to SOLAS, approved at 1MO in 2006, on safe return to port for passenger ships, have finally come into force. It is reminded they are meant to apply to all new passenger ships, including ro-ro passenger ships, having a length, as defined in the Convention, equal or greater than 120m, or being subdivided in three or more Main Vertical Fire Zones. Over that time a number of ships have been designed and constructed as to proactively achieve early compliance with the new requirements, and more new projects are currently being contracted for, or are already at an advanced design stage. Industry has been very active in researching and working on better understanding the applicability of the new requirements and upgrading their designs and products accordingly. These processes have required various parties to address and start building up experience on the range of approaches that can be followed to demonstrate and, where applicable, test compliance of the ship's design. The passenger ships community is now handling the complexity of the available tools on a daily basis, and the paper aims to offer an insight on possible methodologies which may enable and facilitate the preparation, production and use of the necessary documentation for appraisal, testing and operation of the ship and its systems.
