Changes within the manufacturing environments are forcing automobile manufacturers to perform at new levels of speed, flexibility and inter-company collaboration. To support these changes a prototype multi-component flexible machining line has been developed that allows manufacturers to balance lines by allocating operations according to machine specifications. An integrated computer software tool is developed to enable the responsive design, operation and cost effective configuration of multi-component flexible machining lines. The software will calculate operating cycle times and generate a respective machine layout. Discrete event simulation models which link this software will also provide a dynamic perspective of the balanced production line. The new software will allow users to analyse throughput, work-in-process, resource utilisation and buffer sizes.
