Existing methods of identifying bank-full stages and determining bank-full discharge require substantial field investigations to obtain pertinent results. We are seeking to develop a new approach, based on statistical analysis of the water level time-series. The initial results obtained at 12 hydrometric stations evidence that it is possible, using appropriate filters, to identify a change related to the overflow phenomenon. This change does not, however, correspond to the topographic bank-full stage but to a change in hydraulic behavior situated slightly above that level.
