摘要

Increased economic activity in a wide variety of sectors of the global economy has, until recently, assumed a sustainable, safe, nutritious food supply. Livestock services have tended to focus on constraints to production, including disease. Other problems that might have arisen during production - food safety, emerging diseases, environmental sustainability - have been relegated to other agencies and dealt with separately. In a rapidly urbanizing, globalized world, this is no longer a viable option, nor is it based on good science.rnHistorically, almost all human diseases have emerged from animal populations and many of these have emerged because agricultural activities have been designed to meet one set of goals while externalizing the others. When the disease or production problems were local, or occurred in temperate zones with large supplies of cheap fossil fuels, these could be managed. When livestock owners in developing countries are called upon to feed burgeoning urban populations over widerngeographic areas, the links between disease emergence, economies of scale, webs of feed and product shipping bring into sharp focus the global nature of our relationships, and the need to reconsider both the scientific basis of our services and the way in which they are delivered.rnIt is no longer satisfactory to expect farmers themselves to integrate all the conflicting demands made on them without guidance. We are part of the system. We are part of the problem, and can be part of the solution. We need to gain a better understanding of how it works, and, as Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the fictional Starship Enterprise says: "Engage!"
