Current workflow management systems (WfMSs) lack the ability to ensure a process is planned and performed in accord with a particular industry standard, such as IEC 61508. These standards are generic, however, their every application is different because of the differences in project details. This paper describes the use of an intelligent compliance agent, called Inspector, in our Compliance Flow research project that aims to provide support for engineering design processes to ensure a standard complied process. Our solution is to model the standard into a model of standards using our Standard Modelling Language, and then uses Inspector to perform compliance check to the design process during both plan and run time according to the model. Some examples drawing on a draft version of EC 61508 are used to illustrate the mechanisms of the modelling of standards and the compliance check.
