Identification of Building Blocks for MEMS Design Synthesis

One of the pre-requisites for MEMS design synthesis is that the synthetic building blocks have to be prior specified by the designers. This often implies that the designers have to have a rough idea of the physical structure of the intended design before design synthesis. To help identify the necessary building blocks, this paper presents a behavioural modelling and behaviour-phenomenon-structure mapping methodology. Briefly it can be described as a sequential process of modelling the MEMS behavioural process, mapping a required behaviour to an enabling phenomenon, and extracting and retrieving the building blocks from the identified structural components. To achieve this goal, several aspects of adaptation are made to the existing design model that works for general (macro-level) product design, including the incorporation of chemical/biological/other reactions (in addition to physical interactions) and the involved substances in behaviour representation, and the exploitation of multidisciplinary phenomena and three kinds of constraints in behavioural modelling. These constraints not only enable a required behaviour to occur but also enable it to produce an output at the desired level of significance. With these strategies and methods, the building blocks for a MEMS design synthesis may be identified or developed in a formalized manner. At the end of the paper, a MEMS design synthesis case study is presented to further illustrate the proposed methodology, as well as to demonstrate its usefulness.
