Machining of Hard and Brittle Materials with Ultrahard Cutting Tools

Ultrahard cutting tool materials, including diamond and Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN), possess very high hardness, excellent thermal conductivity and very high elastic module, and thus suit very well for machining hard and brittle materials. With the hardened steel, cemented carbides, engineering ceramics and industrial glass as the tested workpiece materials, the cutting behaviors and cutting mechanisms of diamond and CBN cutting tools were studied experimentally. It was shown out that, in selecting ultrahard tool materials, much attention had to be paid to the matching of mechanical and chemical properties between tool and workpiece. This paper is aimed to promote the proper application of the ultrahard cutting tool materials.
