This paper has examined the performance of a TCSC for improvement of power system performance. Based on the analytical studies and results from time simulations, the following conclusions can be drawn: 1. The contribution of a TCSC to damping is effective both for small and large disturbances. 2. The contribution of a TCSC to damping is effective under disturbances, which result in a change of network topology. 3. A TCSC increases the damping of the inter-area oscillation mode. The damping effect of the two TCSCs is larger than the damping effect of one TCSC. This means that the TCSCs do not detract the damping effect of each other. 4. The damping effect of a TCSC is higher for the conditions when sufficient power is flowing through the inter-tie.
