Inter-arrival times of acoustic emission (AE) events that occur during bearing operation follow a statistical Weibull distribution. Such a distribution is characterised by three parameters: its shape γ, characteristic life θ and guaranteed life t_0. In this research, two parameters were derived from the original Weibull parameters and they are: a) a ratio defined as γ/θ, referred to as the shape-to-life ratio and abbreviated to STL; and b) a time period, L_(63), defined as being the sum of ? and t_0. Results of the research are presented in two separate papers: Part 1 and Part 2. Part 1 deals with the principle of acoustic emission and provides a justification for using the Weibull model, STL and L_(63); Part 2 reports on the experimental work that lent support to the theory presented in Part 1.
