An understanding of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and changes at the national and regional scale is necessary to further our understanding of the global carbon cycle, to assess the responses of terrestrial ecosystems to climate change and to aid policy makers with land use/management decisions. To gain such an understanding a system is needed that can deal with complex combinations of environmental and management variables. Process-based models deal with such complexities. Ecosystem models, designed for site-scale applications, can be linked to spatia databases giving spatially explicit results that allow geographic areas of change in SOC stocks to be identified. The Global Environment Facility Soil Organic Carbon (GEFSOC) Modelling System link two of the most widely used SOC models (Roth-C and Century) and the IPCC Tier I method to spatia databases via a GIS. The system is derived from software developed, over the last ten years, for large-scale spatially-distributed simulations by The Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory, Colorad State University, USA. Data from four contrasting areas (The Brazilian Amazon, Kenya, Jordan an The Indian Indo-Gangetic Plains) were used to develop the system. Development of the system; discussed, as are estimated changes in SOC stocks between 2000-2030 in the four case study areas.
