Changes in carbon stocks and carbon sequestration potential of Uganda's forest sector

Uganda has about 4.9 million ha of forestland with potential to act as a sink for carbondioxide. In addition, non-forestland areas contain tree resources that provide additional stores for carbondioxide. Uganda's economy is based on exploitation of natural resources. Both forest and non-forestland make a substantial contribution to the country's economic and environmental well-being and have an important role in climate change mitigation. We analyze changes in carbon Stocks in both forest and non-forestland uses using inventory data. Results indicate that between 1989 and 1996 there was an increase in carbon stocks in forestland uses and subsistence farmlands and a decrease in other non-forestland uses. The main source of carbon emissions is use of biomass is fuel wood, constituting an annual source of 40 x 106 t CO_2/yr. Since the energy sector in Uganda is characterized by a heavy dependency on biomass energy and with the situation likely to continue at least in the foreseeable future, strategies that improve biomass energy production and use efficciency to reduce pressure on forest resources are required to contribute to sustainable development and climate change mitigation.
