Significant spatial and temporal variability in sea minus air pCO_2 (40-160 μatm) and sea-to-air CO_2 flux (1-6 mol C m~(-2) year~(-1)) are simulated for the tropical Pacific. The magnitude, spatial pattern, and the seasonal to interannual variability from the model are in general agreement with observations. DIC plays a dominant role in determining the interannual variability of the sea surface pCO_2 in the tropical Pacific. However, SST can also significantly influence the spatial and temporal variability in the sea surface pCO_2 in particular during warm seasons. On seasonal time scales, the sea surface pCO_2 is relatively high both in fall and in spring in the eastern upwelling region. While the high sea surface pCO_2 in fall is associated with the upwelling of carbon-rich water, the high sea surface pCO_2 in spring results from the high SST and low out-gassing. On interannual time scales, the sea surface pCO_2 is largely associated with the ENSO cycle, and the estimated regional outgassing ranges from 0.4 Gt C year~(-1) during warm ENSO to ~1 Gt C year~(-1) during cold ENSO.rnThese analyses offer useful insights not only for the carbon fluxes in the tropical Pacific Ocean, but also for better understanding of sources and sinks in the global carbon budget.
