Soil respiration subjected to clear-cut and slash burnt treatments was estimated from late October 2001 to 2003 in a Chinese fir forest (Cunninghamia lanceolata, CL) and a secondary evergreen broadleaved forest (BF) located in Fujian Province, southeastern China. Soil respiration was measured as CO_2 evolved in situ using soda lime. Respiration levels varied seasonally with maximum rates in May to July. Clear-cut and slash burnt plots showed increases in CO_2 evolution rates and total soil respiration in October-December 2001 compared with untreated controls of both forests. In years 2002 and 2003, respiration rates as well as cumulative soil respiration were significantly lower than those of the controls. Soil temperature and moisture content at 10 cm depth were monitored on all treatments. There were no significant difference in soil temperature among treatments in each forest, while clear-cut and slash burnt treatments resulted in reduced soil moisture contents. Relationships between soil respiration and soil environmental variables were examined through regression analysis. Combining soil temperature and soil moisture content proved to be the reliable predictors of CO_2 evolution on control plots, but not on clear-cut and slash burnt plots. We concluded that the effects of clear-cutting and slash burning on soil respiration are the combined result of changes in soil autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration, and soil environment variables.
