In a site investigation program, several types of tests can be used for stratigraphic profiling and to estimate geotechnical parameters. This paper presents in situ test results from three experimental research sites on residual soils from different parent rocks in Sao Paulo State, Brazil, including CPT, SPT, DMT and DPSH. Some test results are discussed to emphasize the importance of standard equipments and procedure, as well as the necessity of good qualification of involved technicians. The CPT test can be considered a reference tool to assess variability of tropical soils that can be obtained through the application of statistical methods, with the purpose of reducing the uncertainty on the estimative of geotechnical parameters. At the moment, the interpretation of CPT testing in tropical soils has to be confirmed with soil sampling at selected depths and local correlations have to be developed considering soil genesis since it affects soil behavior.
