Foamed concrete is manufactured by adding a foaming agent to a cement based mortar. Research on the material properties of foamed concrete has been conducted on an ongoing basis at the University of Pretoria since 1992. The mechanical properties of foamed concrete are dependent mainly on the micro-properties of the material and therefore microscopic studies on the micro-properties have also been conducted. The air-void size distribution will be discussed in this paper as it is one of the most important micro-properties influencing the strength of foamed concrete. The aim of this paper is to find parameters to explain and quantify relationships between air-void distribution and structural properties. Prelimanary results will be discussed.
