A method for the determination of a softening curve characterising the behaviour of a material inside the process zones developing ahead of a crack is investigated. The method uses the data on crack opening displacements to recover: length, stresses inside the zone and its opening. It is based on solving a non-classical boundary value problem formulated as overdetermined on a visual part of the crack (where both stresses and crack opening displacements are known) with no boundary conditions prescribed in the process zone. An integral equation written with respect to the cohesive stresses is reduced to an ill-posed linear algebraic system whose regular solution is found by singular value decomposition. Stability of solutions is investigated by conducting a number of numerical experiments. Examples of softening curve reconstructions are presented.
