Egypt has established the High Aswan Dam for protecting the country from high floods and controlling the floodwater along successive decades. The dam proves its remarkable benefits, protecting the Nile valley from damage in one year and provides the country with the water necessary for agriculture purposes in another year. However, some side effects appear, such as erosion of North coastal zone as the High Dam nearly prevents the sediment from entering the river. To overcome this problem, various projects have been carried out to protect the North coastal region from serious erosion especially in Rasheed. National Water Research Center (NWRC) institutes contribute to these efforts. Among that is a project for monitoring and assessment of Rasheed shoreline erosion carried out by the Survey Research Institute (SRI). Remote sensing change detection technique is utilized for erosion monitoring and variations assessment. Base maps developed by photogrammetric techniques in 1991 are considered as the reference for the change detection process. Successive SPOT remote sensing images, acquired in various dates (1997 and 2000), are used in this research. These images are radiometrically and geometrically corrected using Erdas Imagine software and used for changes monitoring. The results show that more efforts are necessary for protecting this region, as serious variations remarkably exist. Future images are needed for continuous monitoring and assessment. High-resolution satellite imagery (IKONOS & QUICK BIRD) might be useful to be used at certain areas, such as river downstream for acquiring much more accurate observations about this sensitive area.
