Water is one of the most fundamental prevalent substances in the earth atmosphere system. Understanding of general laws governing the distribution of water over earth and water balance of sea and river basin is essential for the rational use and management of the water resource. From global perspective hydrologic cycle is complete, but within catchments is not complete. The changes in hydrologic cycle have impact on water quality, drainage, agriculture, flood etc. In the present study an attempt has been made to create a digital database pertaining to natural resources. An integrated analysis of this database on watershed basis is used in estimation of the runoff from ungauged catchments. The study area covers the Dhule taluk in the south - eastern part of the Dhule district and located between 20°37′20″ to 21°10′00″ North latitude and 74°20′12″ to 74°59′51″ East longitude. The Dhule tehsil falls in zone - 6 of the agro - climatic zones. GIS database is developed by incorporating the digital information pertaining to topography of the study area, land use and lands cover patterns, stream channel and drainage network. Respective attribute information is also collected and is fed into the database and the data is analysed. By using the developed database of drainage map and land use/ land cover, runoff from ungauged catchments of the study area is estimated by using the rational formula. This work attempts to highlight how GIS can be used for the development of watersheds.
