This paper is a case study of an upgrade to the 84-year-old WP05 Ryde Water Pumping Station, in Sydney, Australia. It outlines how hydraulic surge suppression has been achieved without resorting to large hydraulic surge suppression structures such as air vessels or surge tanks, since space did not allow it. This was possible in an old station by modernising any equipment, or controls that allowed substantial flow changes to occur such as multiple simultaneous pump starts or stops. The station, designed in 1918 to accommodate steam driven pumps, now supports a total of 13 electric pumps and supplies almost one-third of Sydney's 4 million people.
