A constructed treatment wetland was designed to remediate nitrate-contaminated groundwater and return it via recharge to an alluvial aquifer or as runoff to the nearby San Pedro River. The design establishes a favorable balance between regulatory remedial objectives and physical, environmental, and sociocultural conditions at the site. The project was undertaken as a remedial action addressing a groundwater media component of the Apache Powder Superfund Site in Cochise County, Arizona. The 4.4 ac wetland is designed to receive groundwater at a maximum rate of approximately 250 gal/min with dissolved nitrate concentrations up to 300 mg/1. Within a 7- to 10-day retention period, dissolved nitrate concentrations can be reduced to concentrations less than the federal drinking water Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 10 mg/1. This reduction is achieved by typical biological denitrification in anoxic conditions produced by the breakdown of wetland detritus. Wetland construction was completed in 1997. The system is presently in an "establishment phase."
