Until the middle of the nineteen sixties, town and process gas supply in the UK was almost exclusively derived from coal distillation. A transition period occurred int he late sixties and early seventies using gas derived from high-pressure reforming systems that were hydrocarbon based. The introduction of natural gas from the North Sea resulted in closure of all manufacturing gas plants and their associated by-products units. Although the above ground plants were cleared, many sites were left with their underground by-products storage tanks intact and full. Redevelopment of these sites began to show familiar patterns of pollution from the in-situ contamination.
