Complexation of metals with aqueous sulfide in an anaerobic treatment wetlands

The role of aqueous metal sulfide complexes in an anaerobic treatment wetland in Butte, Montana was examined. Anaerobic wetlands remove metals from the impacted water by creating a reducing environment in which sulfate is bacterially reduced to H_2S. Metals then react with the H_2S to form insoluble metal sulfide precipitates. However, higher concentrations of H_2S can create sulfide complexes and increase metal solubilities to undesirable levels. Wetland field results of metal solubilities in the presence of sulfide are compared with published metal sulfide solubility studies and the geochemical modeling program, MINTEQA2. The study revealed the importance of understanding the crystalline phase of the precipitates, the valence state of the metal of interest, and the quality/completeness of the thermodynamic data being used.
