The Mobile IPv6 is a protocol specification developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to address the mobility issue in the IPv6 Internet. While Mobile IPv6 handles mobility of individual nodes, it ignores the mobility of an entire network, and, consequently, mobility inside mobility. By mobility inside mobility, we mean mobility of a node or a sub-network inside another mobile network. As wireless connectivity and the Internet become all pervasive, network mobility and mobility inside mobility will sooner become a reality. An example of network mobility is an airplane providing Internet access to its on-board passengers. The devices used by the passengers form a mobile network, which may change its point of attachment to the Internet several times while it is on an intercontinental flight lasting for about twelve hours. An example of node mobility into or from a mobile network is a train providing Internet access to its passengers, while passengers are free to change trains and still being connected to the Internet. In this paper, we propose an extension in Mobile IPv6 to support arbitrary combination of node and network mobility. The proposed scheme also ensures optimal routing. To achieve the improvements outlined above, we propose specialized operations for the border router of the mobile network, and extended binding cache management in the home agent and correspondent nodes. The first one allows a border router to perform mobility management on behalf of the stationary nodes inside the mobile network and inform the peers about any existing multilevel mobility. The second one allows the peers to determine the optimal route to a destination.
