Sefidrud buttress Dam with a height of 105 m was designed in 1959 and commissioned in 1963. The dam is located on Sefidrud river, downstream of confluence of Qezelowzan and Shahrud rivers, some 250km north-west of Tehran. The main purpose of the project was regulating water for irrigation demands. In 1980 after 17 years of operation, about 700 mcm of Sediment deposited in the reservoir, reducing the storage capacity from 1760 to 1050 mcm, corresponding to 40% loss of capacity. Reservoir Sedimention in such extent had negative impact on regulated water. This phenomenon necessitated changing mode of reservoir operation from normal to desiltation. Desiltation operation started since 1980 and it is being continued. During the first 10 years (1980―89) of desiltation period, 175 mcm of deposited sediment was removed from the reservoir. This paper contains a review of the results of desiltation works carried out at Sefidrud Reservoir, emphasizing on diversion technique as supplementary measure to flushing.
