Continuous keyboard operation as profession has lead to several musculoskeletal disorders with special reference to the muscles and tendons of fingers, wrist joint, forearm, upper arm and shoulder, as reported globally. This needs to be improved either by human oriented keyboard design or with a feasible hand support, which prevents the injuries and discomfort related to hand. This study was an attempt to validate the effectiveness of a pre-designed keyboard jointly undertaken by the Department of Family Resource Management, SNDT Women's University, and the Industrial Design Centre, Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. To understand the existing hazardous condition a survey was conducted in different banks, computer institutes and private firms. This was followed by a laboratory simulated study on office workstation in which 6 subjects (3 males and 3 females) were invited to perform the key board operations for continuous 45 minutes in two specific conditions, without and with hand support, introducing a break of 30 minutes in between. Different parameters like surface electromyography of trapezius, deltoid, extensor carpi radialis, flexor carpi radialis, heart rate, and pegboard test were obtained to assess the effectiveness of the hand support and also to understand the degree of fatigue reduced by the use of hand support. Subjective feeling was also recorded after the study. While the EMG results were not very conclusive due to low number of subjects, the subjective feelings directed towards better comfort and thereby acceptance of the hand support.
