To develop the strategies for improvement in shooting performance among army marksmen, 41 marksmen (age 22-36 yr.) were studied. Subjects were grouped as elite and sub- elite shooters. Their heart rate (HR), blood pressure, respiratory rate, oral temperature and cognitive potential (P300) of auditory evoked potential were recorded. Their maximal oxygen consumption was predicted from HR in moderate exercise (100 Watt, 6 min) by using Astrand & Rhyming nomogram. Their HR while firing during in house matches were recorded. From this, preparatory HR (5 secs before sharp rise in HR coinciding trigger pull), average and maximal HR were determined. To compare the cognitive potential of marksmen comparisons were made among the values of P300 component of evoked potential with separate two sets of that of 40 electronic fellowship course (EFC) trainees (having greater intellectual activity) and 39 infantry soldiers (having lesser intellectual activity).Various resting parameters and predicted work capacity showed no difference among elite and sub-elite marksmen. Preparatory HR was significantly higher in both elite and sub-elite (p<0.02, p<0.001) marksmen as compared to their resting HR. It was significantly higher in sub-elite shooters (p<0.05) than in elite shooters. Average shooting HR of elite and sub-elite shooters were within and above 30% respectively above their resting HR. 80% of subjects of both marksmen and EFC trainees showed 10 μV or greater values of AMP3 (amplitude of P300) but only 61.5% infantry soldiers showed the same. Mean AMP3 value of marksmen and EFC trainees were significantly higher than infantry soldiers. Shooting HR and P300 are good indicators to mark progress in training of marksmen and for screening.
