摘要

I like to recall back the year 1956-58, when ergonomics research society was formed. I am not very sure about the exact year of the formation of ergonomics society, I remember that Dr. Edholm and Dr. Wisner came to Professor Crowden at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London regarding discussion of formation of Ergonomics Research society. At that time I was doing my Ph.D. work under Professor Crowden. The word ergonomics was taken from the Greek word "Ergonomus". 'Ergo' means work and 'Nomous' means Science, hence it is actually a science of work, related to man - machine -environment system. Before we go into retrospective review, I'd like to go back before 13th century when effect on man due to work was related to wrath of god or a Demon. In 13th century "Hippocrates" was the fist man, who related the effect due to environment. So he is called today "father of medicine". In 16th century Bernandino Ramazzini wrote in his book "Diamorbis Diotriba" added one dictum on Hippocrates' hypothesis. He wrote: "when a doctor visits a working class home, he should be content to sit, on three legged stool if, there is not a gilded chair - He should ask all the questions under Hippocrates' Dictum, but he should add one more - "what is your occupation?" So we find the work science was related to occupation namely, and also proves the working class was economically poor, as they had four-legged stool. In retrospective reviewing of ergonomics discipline, I like to put few examples where, ergonomics discipline has helped five dictums namely: Safety, health, comfort, efficiency and produce levity.
