Developmental changes of hypocotyls storage proteins in germinating soybean seeds

Soybean seeds consist of two main parts, hypocotyls and cotyledons. The complexity of the subunits of hypocotyls storage proteins and their degradation mechanisms have not yet been well documented, although there are many reports on the synthesis of seed storage proteins and their accumulation in cotyledons. We used proteomic techniques to investigate the complexity of hypocotyls storage proteins in the dry seeds and their developmental changes during germination. We found that the quantitative difference and the subunit category of seed storage proteins were less in hypocotyls than in cotyledons in dry mature seeds. During germination, three patterns in the quantitative changes of hypocotyls storage proteins were observed: (1) the quantity increased, and then decreased; (2) the quantity decreased continuously; (3) the quantity did not change significantly. This suggests the presence of functional differences among the hypocotyls storage proteins and their subunits.
