Typical methods of attaching ultrasonic transmitters and receivers to the outside of a fluid flow pipe involve substantial setup and calibration time, and the necessity to quantify a variety of system variables values that may not be precisely known. A unique method of adjusting the placement of the transceivers of an ultrasonic measurement system as been developed at the Instrumentation and Cryogenics Laboratory of the University of Southern Mississippi. The positioning system was designed to analyze the signal available at the receiver and based upon the results of signal analysis, verify that the transducers are placed in locations that provide the optimum acoustical reception. Results of he positioning system were compared with results from two off-the-shelf ultrasonic flow meters and with analytical calculations. Future design modifications include adapting the measurement configuration to cryogenic systems.
