Kenaf has been used successfully in a tertiary treatment system consisting of charcoal, kanuma soil, and kenaf. The new system was designed to use waste charcoal as growing medium for kenaf. However, in the process of the development, however, we encountered some problems using kenaf in other combinations. The unhealthy kenaf leaves and the waste charcoal were analyzed and it was found that both had higher-than-normal heavy metal content. It was also confirmed in other experiments that highly concentrated metal solution has negative effects on kenaf growth but the wastewater influent had very low metal concentration. The experiment confirmed that kenaf has the ability to desorb heavy metal from waste charcoal and the adsorption occurred through the root system to the different parts of the kenaf tissue. From these experiments we concluded that waste charcoal should not be reused as a medium for kenaf and that charcoal should be used separately for kenaf cultivation in a combined system.
