Attempts were made to understand the morphological and chemical characteristics of bast and core fibers Malaysian grown kenaf and to determine the optimum conditions for kraft pulping of kenaf bast, core and whole stalk. The two fractions in kenaf were different morphologically, bast fibers were long, slender and thick-walled, while the core fibers were much shorter, wider, thin-walled and with large lumen. Bast and core fibers had different chemical compositions. Morphological and chemical studies indicated that kenaf bast and core fibers were compatible to soft and hardwood fibers. The optimum kraft pulping condition was 17% active alkali with 25% sulphidity charge. The quality of paper from core, bast, and whole stalk pulp was quite different. Except for tear index, core fibers had the highest strength properties followed by whole stalk and bast fibers. The separated bark and core fractions can be used to produce pulps with properties comparable to those produced from wood.
