Traditionally, kenaf sticks are used as fuel or fence by farmers with little value addition. In collaboration with a factory located in Hunan province, China, the Institute of Bast Fiber Crops (IBFC) has developed a process of producing door boards utilizing kenaf sticks, The door boards consists of wood frames filled with small bundles of kenaf sticks with various length. The board has the advantages of high strength, sound absorption, low cost, resistant to moisture and micro-organism attack as compared with full wood board.
