The present study deals with the application of the catalytic ozonationrnprocess TOCCATA? as tertiary treatment of pulp mill effluent. Firstrnseries of experiments conducted in semi-batch mode allow comparingrnthe reactivity of seven organic pollutants commonly found in pulp millrnwastewaters during conventional and catalytic ozonation. The resultsrnobtained highlight the benefits provided by catalytic ozonation,rncompared to direct ozonation, particularly in term of rates of TOC andrnCOD abatement. The comparison of both oxidation systems for therntreatment of a biological pulp mill effluent shows similar effects.rnFinally, the performances of the catalytic ozonation process are fullyrndemonstrated through continuous mode testing. The overall resultsrnshow the suitability of catalytic ozonation process as a tertiaryrntreatment.
