Morphology of Giardia lamblia cysts following treatment with ozonernor in combination with free chlorine were studied using transmissionrnelectron microscopy. Experiments were conducted using oxidantrndemand-free 0.05 M phosphate buffer and in vitro derived G. lambliarncysts. Nucleic acid staining employing LIVE/DEAD BacLight? wasrnused for the evaluation of cyst viability.rnMain features of injury induced by ozone were cyst wall damage,rnplasmalemma breakage, lysis of peripheral vacuoles and nuclearrndegradation. Prominent morphological damages included thernformation of internal vacuoles and the apparent dissolution ofrncytoplasmic material. Ultrastructural changes in cysts exposed torncombined oxidants showed that the conditioning of the cyst wall byrnpre-treatment of the cyst by first oxidant allowed for easier penetrationrnand increased damage induced by the second oxidant.
