Towards the end of the service life of a peat production area, production can be prolonged by moving the peat from every second strip into the intervening strips with an excavator, levelling it off with a bulldozer and forming new strips for extraction in the normal way. This also implies a change in drainage conditions, however, as the strips from which the peat has been removed are left as areas of mineral soil, so that new drainage ditches frequently have to be dug in them. The water from these ditches is then conducted into the main collecting ditches either via the original ditch marking the boundary of the strip, or via a new one dug for the purpose. These new arrangements will mean that the original slurry troughs and basins and the slurry retainers in the balk pipes are bypassed, so that the drainage water can flow directly into the collecting ditches unless new retention systems are constructed.
