To clarify water quality and its influence factors on small ponds surrounded by agricultural land use in Ishikari peatlands, the water quality, water depth and inflow discharges of pond water and inflow water into ponds, and the properties of bottom sediments were measured. Water depth of small ponds rose during the irrigation periods of paddy fields (from May to August), and the water quality of small ponds depended generally on the quality of inflow waters. Organic matter contents of bottom sediments ranged within about 25 to 60%, and pore water in sediments occupied about 80% by volume. The concentrations of NH_4-N in pore water were higher than pond waters, due to reductive conditions of pore water.
