A number of generated artificial time histories (GATH) fitting to an EC8 spectrum were randomly generated and the average generated spectrum compares well with the EC8 spectrum. They were then used to perform some parametric studies on the suitability of the FE mesh and key parameters of a concrete bridge pier. A FE smeared crack model was then used to analyse concrete and RC bridge piers under the GATH. Comparisons with experimental results show that damping and unloading stiffness have been overestimated for cyclic loading.
