The on-going PhD research described in the paper examines strength and deformation capacity of RC members using a large database of about to 2000 monotonic or cyclic tests. This database includes beams, columns and walls with rectangular section, carried to flexure- or shear-controlled failure. Members with circular section or with hollow, both rectangular and circular, section are also considered, to extend the scope to bridge piers. Members without earthquake resistant detailing (e.g., with sparse and inadequately closed stirrups, or with insufficient lap splices) are also covered. Models are developed for strength, deformation at yielding and ultimate deformation, as a function of geometry, detailing and mechanical properties.
