As the European Commission moves towards a positive list of approved substances, this paper reviews the current regulatory position and future proposals relating to selection of additives and related substances for food contact plastics. Topical issues associated with migration of the following additives are discussed.rnBenzophenone and Isopropyl thioxanthone (ITX) photo-initiators in UV curable printing ink systemsrnEpoxidised soyabean oil (ESBO) in PVC formulationsrnPhthalate plasticisers, Ethyl hexanoic acid, Bisphenol A, BADGE.Aromatic Amines from laminating adhesives.rnResearch being undertaken at Rapra to examine migration of additives, including antioxidants, stabilisers and antistatic agents using chromatographic techniques based on mass spectrometry is reviewed.
