ADDITION OF NATURAL ANTIOXIDANTS TO POLYOLEFINS FORMULATIONS

The permeability to oxygen and sensibility to oxidation of polyolefins limit the application of the thermoplastics in the field of food packaging so that different antioxidants are added to improve their properties. Probably, the most usual combination of antioxidants in commercial polyolefins is the mixture of the secondary antioxidant Phenol, 2,4-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-, phosphite (3:1) (CAS: 31570-04-4), and a primary antioxidant, like the Benzenepropanoic acid, 3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxy-, 2,2-bis[[3-[3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxyphenyl]- 1-oxopropoxy]methyl]-1,3-propanediyl ester (CAS: 6683-19-8) or Benzenepropanoic acid, 3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxy-, octadecyl ester (CAS: 2082-79-3), usually named Irgafos 168, Irganox 1010 and Irganox 1076 respectively. The results of the use of these antioxidants are successful but it presents limitations like the turning yellow, instability of formulation with the associated risks of the formation of degradation products, migration and changes in organoleptic properties. The uses of biological antioxidants like tocopherols are being studied to guarantee toxicological security of plastics in food packagings, but although these ones showed a high antioxidant activity, this efficiency is shown during short a period of time so that the main of this work is test new formulations employing like antioxidants compounds extracted of plants alternative to commercial antioxidants and tocopherols. In this way, different formulations of polypropylene with natural antioxidants and polyolefin with commercial antioxidants were extruded in laboratory and were evaluated respect of melt flow index and concentration levels in a long term use to estimate their application in food packaging.
