Fundamental study on shear strength of corroded plate girder web

In this study, the non-linear finite element analyses of rectangular plates, which used actual corrosion surface data, were performed for the shear strength of corroded web. These analytical results were compared with the experimental results of shear-loading test for corroded plate girder. Finally, the representative thickness to estimate the shear strength and the ultimate behavior of the corroded web was discussed from the experimental and analytical results. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) the stress distribution and buckling mode for corroded web in ultimate state differ from those for corrosion-free web. This is caused by stress concentration with surface irregularities. The corrosion of web deteriorates the maximum shear strength of the plate girder, (2) from the comparison of experimental and analytical results, the shear strength of corroded plates can be estimated simply by using only average thickness of web.
