On the basis of factor analytic research we survey the system of visual cognitive abilities: visual thought, visual knowledge acquisition as well as the visual learning ability latent in the background of the two Focussing our attention on the visual communication ability, we analyze its empirical — operational and rational -creative levels. As a result of this, the difference between the abilities of reading and interpreting as well as representing and forming figures may be exposed. A basic means of developing visual abilities is teaching drawing. We establish that besides the reproductive component of the visual cognitive ability it is also an outstandingly important task to develop students' ability of independent knowledge acquisition. As a result of this, students' creativity improves, too. In the final part of our study we examine the possibilities in teaching technical drawing to develop students' cognitive ability of a creative kind.
