A building's path from concept to reality is fraught with challenges. The process and all involved suffer when the concept, design or construction falls below par. This is rarely by choice and the industry is forever looking to improve the process. The best place to start is with a strong design and then to ensure that the structure, as it is built, conforms to the approved design documents. For help, owners, designers, enforcers and contractors turn to a building code to define their relationship and to provide the minimum standards for quality. With NFPA 5000~®, the industry has gained a fresh approach to quality assurance. Although not new in concept, NFPA 5000 is the first US model building code to require a quality assurance program as part of a building's design documents, instead of specifying discrete 'special inspections.'This paper introduces NFPA, NFPA 5000 and its quality assurance program requirements.
