Ideally assessment of the performance of a nondestructive evaluation (NDE) system e.g. Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) inspection system should be based on the numerical errors between predicted values and the ground truth. However, it is often observed that the ground truth itself may not be error-free. Nevertheless, it is the only information available about the parameter values. In such cases simple analysis of numerical errors cannot be used to assess the performance of the NDE system. This paper reviews various methods proposed to address this issue over past seven decades.
